Volunteers are the very heart of our charity
With the help and support of our volunteers, we provide bereavement support to children, young people and their families throughout Cornwall.
Whether you have a few hours or a few days a month to spare we would love to have you as part of our incredible team. If you are interested in volunteering, aged 18 years or older and want to know more, please contact Jane our Volunteer Coordinator either by email or telephone on 01209 215889.

What Volunteer Opportunities are There?
We have three key volunteering areas at Penhaligon’s Friends:

One-to-One Volunteer
Community Volunteer:
Our Community Volunteers act as a key connection between our charity and the communities we serve – supporting community fundraising, promoting our services, raising awareness and sharing knowledge. Community Volunteers are vital in helping others understand the role and impact of Penhaligon’s Friends acting as the local faces of our charity and embracing opportunities to thank and encourage regional support.
Community Volunteering Includes:
- Representing our charity at community fundraising and awareness raising events – could you run our Teddy Tombola stall?
- Giving talks about the charity to local groups, businesses, and schools.
- Developing community awareness of Penhaligon’s Friends by promoting our literature locally and seeking opportunities to add to existing community newsletters.
- Supporting local fundraising events and activities being carried out by community groups and members of the public.
Community Volunteer requirements:
To become a Community Volunteer, you will need to have:
- Completed our free half day ‘Introduction to Penhaligon’s Friends’ training.
- Completed a Volunteer Application form and provided 2 references.
- Obtained an up-to-date enhanced DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) certificate.
- Read and understood Penhaligon’s Friends policies relating to volunteering, signed our confidentiality agreement and provided an up-to date photo for your volunteer ID badge.
- Successfully attended a volunteer induction.

Family Support Volunteer
Our Family Support Volunteers assist members of the Family Services team to deliver Teen Groups, Family Groups, Memory Days and Family Days. Volunteering on an ad hoc or regular basis, Family Support volunteers help us to ensure that our families can come together for support and connection through our planned events and activities.
Family Support Volunteers can also choose to undergo further training to equip them to:
- Help our Family Support team provide telephone support to families.
- Help our Family Support team carry out family visits.
Family support Volunteering Includes:
- Helping our Family Support team run Teens Groups, or Family Groups.
- Helping our Family Support team lead Memory Days or Family Days.
Family Support Volunteers can also choose to undergo further training to equip them to:
- Help our Family Support team provide telephone support to families.
- Help our Family Support team carry out family visits.
Family Support Volunteer requirements:
To become a Family Support Volunteer, you will need to have:
- Completed our free three-hour ‘Introduction to Penhaligon’s Friends’ training.
- Completed our free two-day ‘Family Support Volunteer’ training.
- Completed a Volunteer Application form and provided 2 references.
- Obtained an up-to-date enhanced DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) certificate.
- Read and understood Penhaligon’s Friends policies relating to volunteering, signed our confidentiality agreement and provided an up-to date photo for your volunteer ID badge.
- Successfully attended a volunteer induction.

One-to-One Volunteer
Our One-to-One Volunteers provide therapeutic support that can enable a child / young person to explore their grief, understand the feelings they have been experiencing and to help them to develop tools to enable them to live alongside their grief. Volunteers who deliver One-to-One Support will have completed our Childhood Loss and Grief Level 1 and Level 2 training. Additionally, One-to-One volunteers will be required to attend a further free full day training specifically on becoming a One-One Support Volunteer to ensure they have more in-depth skills and knowledge to deliver sessions with young people independently. One-to-One Volunteers carry out support sessions during school or office hours, liaise closely with the Family Services team and attend regular supervision with our Family Services Lead.
One to One Volunteering Includes:
- Helping our Family Services team deliver One-to-One support to children and young people.
One-to-One Volunteer Requirements:
To become a One-to-One Volunteer, you will need to have:
- Completed our in-depth Level 1 & Level 2 training in Childhood Loss & Grief.
- Completed a Volunteer Application form and provided 2 references.
- Completed Penhaligon’s Friends Safeguarding training.
- Obtained an up-to-date enhanced DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) certificate.
- Commitment to undertake regular supervision with our Family Services Lead.
- Successfully attended a volunteer induction.

How to become a volunteer
We are committed to safer recruitment processes and ensure safeguarding children and young people is at the centre of everything we do.
Our application process is simple:
- Get in touch with us by phone or email for an informal chat and we can answer any questions you may have.
- Enrol on our volunteer training. This training is free, and we try to hold it in different venues around the county regularly.
- Application form – complete our volunteer application form.
- Reference check – we ask for two referees.
- DBS check – all of our volunteers have an enhanced DBS for the Child Workforce.
- Final checks and meeting to come on board as a PF volunteer!
