Volunteer Training

Our volunteers really are the very heart of our charity.  We are thankful to have such an amazing volunteer family who provide bereavement support to children and their families throughout Cornwall.

We always welcome enquiries regarding volunteering. Many people wish to volunteer through their own interest or personal experience or from having heard about us through friends, schools & colleges, other organisations, social media feeds or local press.

The first step to volunteering is to get in touch for an informal chat and then we can book you on to our FREE volunteer training.  Our training options are:

Introduction to Penhaligon’s Friends Training

This free half-day training is perfect for people thinking of joining us as a volunteer. Our ‘Introduction to Penhaligon’s Friends’ training provides a great introduction to our work, services and impact and gives an insight into volunteering roles and options for getting involved with fundraising, supporting community events or helping support families directly.

By successfully completing our Introduction to Penhaligon’s Friends training you will have the option to join us a Community Volunteer and act as a key connection between our charity and the communities we serve. Our Community Volunteers support fundraising and awareness raising events within local communities, promoting our services and sharing knowledge.

Successfully completing our Introduction to Penhaligon’s Friends training is also a requirement for people wanting to progress onto our Family Support Volunteer training and become a Family Support Volunteer with us (see below).

Family Support Volunteer Training

This free two-day training builds on our Introduction to Penhaligon’s Friends training and will enable participants to progress to volunteering with our Family Services team. Our ‘Family Support Volunteer’ training will look at the impact of using creative activities with children and families to explore their grief, alongside understanding the purpose, format and impact of key Penhaligon’s Friends services such as Family Group, Teen Days and Memory Day.

By successfully completing our Family Support Volunteer training you will then have the opportunity to come on board as a Penhaligon’s Friends Family Support Volunteer and be able to assist with Memory Days, Fun Days, Family Groups or Teen Groups. Family Support Volunteers may also go onto do more bespoke training to equip them to provide telephone support to families or provide family visits.

One-to-One Volunteer Training

For those wanting to specifically volunteer and provide bereaved children and young people with One-to-One support, you’ll need to complete our in-depth Professional Level 1 & Level 2 training in Childhood Loss & Grief.  You can find full details on our Professional Training page.

By successfully completing our Level 1 & Level 2 training in Childhood Loss & Grief, you will then have the option to undertake our free 1 day ‘One-to-One Training’ to enable you to come on board as a One-to-One Volunteer and be able to deliver individual support to children and young people.

We aim to have volunteer training days scheduled in different areas of the county on a regular basis. Please get in touch with our Volunteer Coordinator, Jane, to find out about upcoming dates and locations to book your place on the training. You can speak to Jane by telephone on 01209 215889 or contact her by email.
